4 Qurls (Char Qul) As Muslims, we believe that Quran as a whole is the book of ultimate guidance for the entire human race. Thus, the whole of Quran should be recited and practiced upon.            4 Quls is the title of the 4 small Surahs of the Holy Quran. These Surahs are called 4 Quls because they all begin with the word Qul that means “Say”. These Surahs are Surah al-Kafirun, Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas. The Surah al-Kafirun provides the strategy of dealing with non-Muslims in a situation where they are adamant in adversary towards Islam and deny to accept Islam. In this Surah, Allah Almighty taught the Holy Prophet how to deal with the people of Makkah. Allah told him to say that neither Muslims are going to start worshipping their false Gods, nor the people of Makka are going to come into the fold of Islam. The crux of the Surah al-Kafirun is its last verse which says “لكم دينكم و لي دين” which means “To you is your faith and to me is mine.” The Surah al-Ikhlas is about the oneness of Allah Almighty. The Surah says that there no one who can be equivalent to Allah Almighty. The Surah al-Falaq is about seeking the protection of Allah Almighty from the harms of black magic. Lastly, the Surah Al-Nas is about seeking the protection of Allah Almighty from the negative thoughts that are instilled in our hearts and minds by the evils of humankind and jinns.

  1. The Surah al-Kafirun is equal to one-quarter of the whole of the Quran al-Kareem. The Surah gives the Muslim the lesson to stick with your Iman when you are in a society with non-Muslims who are hostile against Islam. If the non-Muslims deny accepting the message of Islam, you should not bother and stick to what is given to you by the Prophet peace be upon him. As far as the benefits of the recitation of the Surah al-Kafirun is concerned, according to a Hadith narrated by Imam Abu Dawood, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him said: “recite Surah al-Kafirun before going to bed because this Surah cleans from Shirk.” Also, the one who recites Surah al-Kafirun before going to sleep remains safe the whole night. The parents need to make their kids recite after them this Surah before sleeping if the kids are so young that they did not learn recitation of Quran yet.
  2. The Surah al-Ikhlas is the Surah of Quran which provides the definition of Allah Almighty and strongest logic of His oneness. As far the benefits of the recitation of Surah al-Ikhlas are concerned, according to a Hadith narrated by Ma’az bin Anas may Allah be pleased with him, the Holy Prophet peace be upon him said: “Whoever recites Surah Ikhlas ten times, Allah Almighty will build a house for him in the heaven. According to some other traditions, the three times recitation of the Surah al-Ikhlas is equal to the recitation of the whole of Quran. 
  3. The Surah al-Falaq teaches how to seek the protection of Allah Almighty from the black magic and evil eye. As far as the benefits of the recitation of Surah al-Falaq is concerned, it is narrated by Imam Tirmidhi that the Holy Prophet peace be upon him used the Surah al-Falaq and Surah Al-Nas against the black magic and evil eye. 
  4. The Surah al-Jinn teaches us how to seek the Protection of Allah Almighty from the negative thought instilled by the Jinns and evils of humans. As far the benefits of this Surah are concerned, according to what has been narrated by Imam Jafar al-Sadiq, whoever recites the Surah Al-Nas in his home every night, he will be safe from the evils of Jinns the whole night. 

In a nutshell, these Surahs are very easy to recite, but their reward and virtues are very high. Therefore, every Muslim should recite these Surahs in his daily routine so that he will be blessed with the benefits and virtues of these Surahs of the Holy Quran. 

Why are the 4 Surahs of the Quran called 4 Qul?

 We all know that the last Surah of the Quran calls 4 Qul. Indeed, Qul is the Arabic word, which has the meaning of ‘Say.’ We see that these 4 Surah starts with the word ‘Qul.’ That is why; these four Surahs of the Quran is called 4 Qul.

These Surahs are named by Surah Kafirun, Surah Ikhlas, and Surah falaq and Surah Annas. The significance of these Surahs may be guessed by that fact it is recited repeatedly by every Muslim.

Which Surah of the Quran is Al-Muawwidhatayn?

There are two Surahs, which are called Al-Muawwidhatayn, the names of these Surahs of the Quran, Surah Annas, and Surah Al-Falaq. These are sometimes called verses of Refuge. These Surahs are included in 4 Qul. The importance of 4 Qul cannot be denied. We can recite it separately or include it with 4 Qul.  

The Meanings of the Four Quls

Surah al-Kafiroon is aimed at disbelievers. The word kafiroon means disbelievers, hence there can be no doubt about the focus of this surah. In the first of the 4 Quls, Allah tells us to direct our words toward the disbelievers. He tells us to say that we don’t worship what they worship. Then, He tells us to mention that they won’t worship what Muslims worship. The next two verses are repetitions of the previous two, while in the last one, we say: To you your religion, and to me mine. A powerful surah indeed.

The second of the 4 Quls is Surah Ikhlaas, which contains a description of Allah’s Oneness and His attributes. In the first verse, we say that Allah is the One and Only. In the second one, we say that He is the self-sufficient one. In the third verse, we say that He has no offspring and no being shares in His dominion. In the last verse, we say that He is alone on His pedestal and nothing compares with Him.

Surah Falaq is the third of the 4 Quls. Falaq means dawn. In the first verse, we seek refuge in Allah, the Lord of the daybreak. In the second verse, we seek refuge from His creation. In the last three verses, we seek refuge from darkness, witchcraft, magic, and the evil eye.

Surah Nas is the last of the 4 Quls. Nas means mankind. In the first verse of this surah, we seek refuge with Allah, Who is the Lord of all mankind. In the second verse, we say He is the King of mankind. In the third verse, we say He is the God of mankind. In the last three verse, we seek refuge from evil whispers of devils.
