What are Four Quls (4 Qul)?

The 4 Quls are four short Surahs of the Quran: Surah al-Kafirun, Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas. They are called “4 Quls” because each begins with the word “Qul,” meaning “Say.”

In Surah al-Kafirun, Muslims learn how to respond to non-believers who oppose Islam, stressing mutual respect for differing faiths: “To you is your faith, and to me is mine.” Surah al-Ikhlas highlights the oneness of Allah, declaring that no one can be compared to Him. In Surah al-Falaq, protection is sought from the harm caused by black magic. Meanwhile, Surah al-Nas requests protection from the evil thoughts and whispers instigated by humans and jinn.

The Surah al-Kafirun is considered equal to one-quarter of the entire Quran al-Kareem. This Surah teaches Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith (Iman) when living among non-Muslims who are hostile toward Islam. If non-Muslims reject the message of Islam, Muslims should remain firm in their beliefs as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Benefits of Recitation: According to a Hadith narrated by Imam Abu Dawood, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Recite Surah al-Kafirun before going to bed because this Surah cleanses from Shirk.” Additionally, reciting Surah al-Kafirun before sleeping ensures safety throughout the night. Parents are encouraged to teach their young children to recite this Surah before bed if they have not yet learned to recite the Quran.

Surah al-Ikhlas is the Surah of the Quran that provides a clear definition of Allah Almighty and the strongest evidence of His oneness.

Benefits of Recitation: According to a Hadith narrated by Ma’az bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever recites Surah Ikhlas ten times, Allah Almighty will build a house for him in heaven.” Other traditions mention that reciting Surah al-Ikhlas three times is equivalent to reciting the entire Quran.

Surah al-Falaq teaches Muslims how to seek Allah Almighty’s protection from black magic and the evil eye.

Benefits of Recitation: According to a narration by Imam Tirmidhi, the Prophet (peace be upon him) used Surah al-Falaq and Surah Al-Nas for protection against black magic and the evil eye.

Surah Al-Nas teaches us how to seek Allah Almighty’s protection from negative thoughts instilled by Jinns and the evils of humans.
