The Quran holds incredible significance for Muslims worldwide as it offers a guiding light for their lives. Learning it from a young age is crucial, following the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) command. It emphasizes that having knowledge is key to fearing Allah and understanding Islam’s purpose, which is to worship Him. The Quran’s verses are not just words; they are profoundly beautiful and can stir deep emotions, even if someone doesn’t understand the Arabic text. Surah al-Fatiha (Surah 1)

English Translation

Quran Verse
Quran 1:1-7

In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Master of the Day of Judgment.
It is You we worship, and upon You we call for help.
Guide us to the straight path.
The path of those You have blessed, not of those against whom there is anger, nor of those who are misguided.

The importance of these verses

Surah al-Fatiha is the most important surah in the Quran. All Muslims must learn these verses because they are essential for performing the daily prayers. You can’t offer the compulsory daily prayers with Surah al-Fatiha. This surah is also an important type of dua, through which Muslims ask Allah to guide them to the straight path.

The Importance of Patience (Surah 2: 155-157)

Quran 2:155-157

English Translation

We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and some loss of possessions and lives and crops. But give good news to the steadfast.

Those who, when a calamity afflicts them, say, “To God we belong, and to Him we will return.”

Upon these are blessings and mercy from their Lord. These are the guided ones.

The importance of these Qurani Ayat

With these verses, we learn about one of the most important aspects of Islam, which is patience. Having patience is one of the most key aspects of belief because going through trials and tribulations is a fact of life. Allah tests people in different ways but there is no smooth sailing for anyone. However, we must not give up hope of become discouraged in the face of such events. Instead, we should have faith in Allah. As He says elsewhere in the Quran, perhaps He may make us go through a trial which will ultimately be good for us, though we don’t even realize it.

The Verse of Righteousness (Surah 2:177)

Quran 2:177

English Translation

Righteousness does not consist of turning your faces towards the East and the West. But righteous is he who believes in God, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Scripture, and the prophets. Who gives money, though dear, to near relatives, and orphans, and the needy, and the homeless, and the beggars, and for the freeing of slaves; those who perform the prayers, and pay the obligatory charity, and fulfill their promise when they promise, and patiently persevere in the face of persecution, hardship, and in the time of conflict. These are the sincere; these are the pious.

The importance of this verse

This verse gives Muslims some guidelines about doing good. Allah describes the righteous acts that Muslims can do, showing that Islam is a religion that requires us to not only worship Him but to also be good to our fellow human beings. Righteousness is a trait of the best of believers. As we know from a famous Hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) said that Muslim don’t truly have faith until he wants for his brother what he wants for himself. Therefore, this verse shows that righteousness requires us to fulfill the rights of Allah as well as humans.

Ayat al-Kursi (Surah 2:255)

Verse of the Throne
Quran 2:255

English Translation

God! There is no god except He, the Living, the Everlasting. Neither slumber overtakes Him, nor sleep. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His permission? He knows what is before them, and what is behind them; and they cannot grasp any of His knowledge, except as He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not burden Him. He is the Most High, the Great.

The importance of this verse

Ayat al-Kursi is one of the most beautiful verses of the Quran. In fact, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) upon many occasions in the recorded Hadith said that this was the most important verse of the Quran. The reason for that is that this verse shows us the magnificence of Allah, the Supreme Being Who is the Only One to be in existence forever and will remain in existence forever. We should memorize this verse and recite it after the obligatory salah since that is an established sunnah. We can also recite it at other occasions such as before sleeping to gain Allah’s protection.

Last Two Verses of Surah al-Baqarah (Surah 2:285-286)

Quran Verse
Quran 2:285

English Translation

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, as did the believers. They all have believed in God, and His angels, and His scriptures, and His messengers: “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord. To you is the destiny.”

English Translation

Quran Verse
Quran 2:286

God does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. To its credit is what it earns, and against it is what it commits. “Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or make a mistake. O Lord, do not burden us as You have burdened those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear; and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Lord and Master, so help us against the disbelieving people.”

The importance of these verses

As is the case with Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah are also important. These verses primarily focus on the basic beliefs of Muslims and our relationship with Allah. In these verses, Allah informs us about some of the articles of faith. After that, He emphasizes how He never burdens any human being with something that they cannot bear. In this regard, Allah then informs us of a very beautiful dua that we can regularly recite.

Muslims should also learn these last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah. Memorizing them by heart is of much use because in the Prophetic Sunnah, there are many occasions mentioned where we can recite them. Hence, we should take advantage of that and recite them often. According to some Hadith, reciting these two verses at night are like offering night prayer. Moreover, we should recite them before sleeping as well.

Every souls shall taste death (Surah 3:185)

Quran Verse
Quran 3:186

English Translation

Every soul will have a taste of death, and you will receive your recompense on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is swayed from the Fire, and admitted to Paradise, has won. The life of this world is merely enjoyment of delusion.

The importance of this verse

This verse is about an important reality about life. All human beings will face death in their lives. No one will live forever. That is how Allah has made humans. Allah uses this verse to also focus on the purpose of life. He points out how a person who gains acceptance into Paradise has won, while the one who He consigns to the burning fire of Hell has lost. No one gets to take their wealth or belongings with them after they die. It’s only their good and bad deeds that count.

Muhammad (PBUH) was only a messenger (3:144-145)

Quran 3:144-145

English Translation

Muhammad is no more than a messenger. Messengers have passed on before him. If he dies or gets killed, will you turn on your heels? He who turns on his heels will not harm God in any way. And God will reward the appreciative.

No soul can die except by God’s leave, at a predetermined time. Whoever desires the reward of the world, We will give him some of it; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We will give him some of it; and We will reward the appreciative.

The importance of these verses

Islam is a religion that puts all the emphasis on Allah and worship of Him. Unlike other religions where the believers often end up glorifying people and putting them on a high pedestal, Islam focuses on Allah alone. Hence, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was simply a means for Allah to get His message to mankind. Eventually, he died as all humans do, because he was a mere mortal. However, we should admire his character and listen to his commands. Yet, we shouldn’t glorify him too much, or put him at a similar level to Allah because that is akin to shirk. Allah is the One and Only Creator and the Only One Who will exist forever.

Jesus/Isa (AS) rejects divinity (Surah 5:116)

Quran Verse
Quran 5:116

English Translation

And God will say, “O Jesus son of Mary, did you say to the people, `Take me and my mother as gods rather than God?’“ He will say, “Glory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right to. Had I said it, You would have known it. You know what is in my soul, and I do not know what is in Your soul. You are the Knower of the hidden.

The importance of this verse

This verse is of immense importance for Muslims because it contains a clear refutation of the Christians’ view about Prophet Isa (AS). They say that he claimed divinity, stating that he was God’s son. However, this Qurani Ayat clearly shows that he did no such thing. On the Last Day, he will reject any such notions and say that only Allah is to be worshiped, and He is the only one with knowledge of the unseen. The Islamic view of Jesus is the correct one, and he was simply one of Allah’s prophets and messengers as is the case with Adam, Ibrahim, Musa, and Muhammad (PBUT).

Allah’s innumerable bounties (Surah 16:18)

English Translation

Quran 16:18

And if you tried to enumerate the favors of God, you will not be able to count them. God is Forgiving and Merciful.

The importance of this verse

In this short verse, Allah reminds us of the innumerable blessings that He has granted us with. Starting with our own birth, and the creation of the universe itself, all of the things that surround us are blessings from Allah. All that exists besides Him is a part of His creation, and we have so much to be thankful for. Allah mentions that we can’t ever count the blessings which is completely true. They are well beyond our comprehension and understanding.

Humans can choose to believe or disbelieve (Surah 18:28-30)

Quran 18:28-30

English Translation

And content yourself with those who pray to their Lord morning and evening, desiring His Presence. And do not turn your eyes away from them, desiring the glitter of this world. Do not obey him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance—so he follows his own desires—and his priorities are confused.

And say, “The truth is from your Lord. Whoever wills—let him believe. And whoever wills—let him disbelieve”. We have prepared for the unjust a Fire, whose curtains will hem them in. And when they cry for relief, they will be relieved with water like molten brass, which scalds the faces. What a miserable drink, and what a terrible place.

As for those who believe and lead a righteous life—We will not waste the reward of those who work righteousness.

The importance of these verses

These Qurani Ayat provide a very important perspective on life that every Muslim should be well aware of. Allah revealed these Ayat of Surah al-Kahf while the Muslims were undergoing severe hardships in Makkah. He urged the Muslims to not fall into the traps of the disbelievers, and told them to stay firm in the path of Allah.

Allah then mentions that He has revealed the truth, i.e., in the form of the Quran and Sunnah. He then adds a very important point, that many will believe, while many will also disbelieve. Allah tells us that we have free will in this regard. However, He then focuses on the punishments of hell, showing that people who disbelieve and commit sins will suffer immensely. He closes out the 30th verses with the caveat that He will reward the people who do good deeds and are righteous.

Bad deeds that Muslims should avoid (Surah 49:11-13)

Quran 49:11-13

English Translation

O you who believe! No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names. Evil is the return to wickedness after having attained faith. Whoever does not repent—these are the wrongdoers.

O you who believe! Avoid most suspicion—some suspicion is sinful. And do not spy on one another, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. So remain mindful of God. God is Most Relenting, Most Merciful.

O people! We created you from a male and a female, and made you races and tribes, that you may know one another. The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous. God is All-Knowing, Well-Experienced.

The importance of these verses

In these verses, Allah provides us with a list of things we should NOT do. This is a list of bad acts that no Muslim with good character aiming to attain Allah’s pleasure should get involved in. Among them are ridiculing and slandering others, insulting people, having baseless suspicions, spying, and backbiting. Allah has likened backbiting to consuming the flesh of one’s dead brother, showing what a terrible act it is. He then mentions that the best Muslims are those who are righteous. These verses teach Muslims good manners, which is something that many Muslims even nowadays severely lack. As we know from the sunnah, Allah sent the Prophet (PBUH) to perfect good character in people.

Humans should accept Allah as their creator (Surah 57:16-17)

Quran 57:16-17

English Translation

Is it not time for those who believe to surrender their hearts to the remembrance of God, and to the truth that has come down, and not be like those who were given the Book previously, but time became prolonged for them, so their hearts hardened, and many of them are sinners?

Know that God revives the earth after its death. We thus explain the revelations for you, so that you may understand.

The importance of these verses

Allah reminds us of time, which is continuously ticking by. We keep getting closer to the end of our lives with each second. Therefore, He reminds us of the people who He gave the message of Islam to, but they didn’t listen. He urges humanity to be mindful of the time and to surrender to His will and dedicate ourselves to remembrance of Him. After all, in that and in doing good and forbidding evil is our only chance of attaining true success in this world and the hereafter.

The majestic names of Allah (Surah 59:22-24)

English Translation

He is God. There is no god but He, the Knower of secrets and declarations. He is the Compassionate, the Merciful.

He is God; besides Whom there is no god; the Sovereign, the Holy, the Peace-Giver, the Faith-Giver, the Overseer, the Almighty, the Omnipotent, the Overwhelming. Glory be to God, beyond what they associate.

He is God; the Creator, the Maker, the Designer. His are the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him. He is the Majestic, the Wise.

The importance of these verses

Allah is the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth and everything that exists therein. In the Quran, He chooses to reveal some of His names and attributes to us, so that we can understand His magnificence. In these verses are some of his finest attributes. We must always remember that He is in no way comparable to any human being, and His traits are not like any human traits. Humans aren’t perfect creatures and they have plenty of shortcomings while Allah is the Only Perfect Being.

Don’t become one of the losers (Surah 63:9-11)

Quran 63:9-11

English Translation

O you who believe! Let neither your possessions nor your children distract you from the remembrance of God. Whoever does that—these are the losers.

And give from what We have provided for you, before death approaches one of you, and he says, “My Lord, if only You would delay me for a short while, so that I may be charitable, and be one of the righteous.”

But God will not delay a soul when its time has come. God is Informed of what you do.

The importance of these verses

Humans have a habit of getting distracted by things. This is why the manipulation of the human mind is easy to achieve. Hence, even believers may get distracted or start taking pride in their family or their belongings. If they are blessed with something, it is easy to forget the One Who blessed them with those things. Therefore, Allah reminds us of our responsibilities as Muslims so that when we go in front of Him on the Day of Judgment, we are in a position that allows us to enter Paradise.

Allah is One (Surah 112)

Quran 112

English Translation

Say, “He is God, the One.
God, the Absolute.
He begets not, nor was He begotten.
And there is none comparable to Him.”

The importance of these Qurani Ayat

These verses comprise one of the shortest surahs in the Quran. However, it is a surah that is very rich with meaning, and has huge benefits. Many Hadith in Sahih Bukhari point to the fact that reading Surah al-Ikhlaas is like reading one-third of the Quran. Moreover, a man would often recite this surah in Salah, so the Prophet (PBUH) stated that Allah loves him.

When we recite this surah, we are uttering an expression of monotheism, proclaiming Allah as the One and Only God, Who is forever existing. He doesn’t have any children, which negates the Christians’ misguided view of Jesus (AS), neither does He have any parents. Lastly, we state that there is absolutely nothing that is comparable to Him in existence.

Conclusion

To keep this article a little shorter than it could have been, I decided to stop at 15. However, the fact is that the Quran is filled with wisdom and knowledge. Allah tells us to ponder over the Quran for this exact reason. Since it is the uncreated Word of Allah, it only stands to reason that the verses of the Quran would contain immense knowledge that we can benefit from.

We know from the sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) that reciting each letter of the Quran gets us ten good deeds. However, it’s not only that. Reading the Quran is enlightening from a mental aspect as well, and it helps us to understand so much more about Islam and our Creator. This is why the Quran is so important for Muslims. All Muslims who can read the Quran should do so often, and also ponder over its meaning and read the Tafseer to gain a better understanding. This is one of the best methods of remembering Allah, and as Allah said, only in His remembrance do we find peace.
