The Importance of Quran Memorization

Muslims have practiced memorizing the Quran since Allah started revealing it to Prophet Muhammad (S). In the Cave of Hira, Angel Jibril squeezed the Prophet (PBUH) and asked him to read. He then revealed the first verses of Surah Alaq. From then on, as the Prophet slowly began to spread the message of Islam, he would also tell people about the Quran. He would teach it to them, and they would memorize it.

Similarly, millions of Muslims around the world have the Quran memorized in their hearts. This process of Quran memorization usually begins when children are young. Children are the ones who find it easiest to memorize the Quran because that is how Allah made them. Their minds at a young age can learn quickly. As they grow older, the ability to memorize declines and is replaced by the ability to reason and understand.

This is why parents often want to enroll children in Quran memorization classes at a young age. While memorizing a few surahs is crucial for almost every Muslim, it’s also vital for the tradition of Muslim Quran memorizers to continue. It is also possible for adults to memorize the Quran. However, it might be a bit more challenging for them. We have the example of Qari Saad Al-Ghamdi, who reportedly memorized the Quran at the age of 22.
