When and why was Surah Kausar revealed?
Surah Al Kawthar, commonly known as Surah Kausar, was revealed before the migration of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) to Madinah when He faced persecution and hardships from the Quraysh and the people of Makkah. Historians say the Prophet had six children from his first wife, Khadijah. The Prophet’s two sons were Khadijah Qasim and Abdullah, and he had a son named Ibrahim from one of his second wives, Maria, whom he married after Hazrat Khadija passed away.
All the sons of the Prophet died young. After Abdullah’s death, when Muhammad PBUH had no son, the Prophet’s enemies insulted him by calling him Abtar (ابتر). The Arabs of this period called any man left childless, i.e., a person whose lineage was cut off.
This Surah was revealed after insulting comments about the Holy Prophet (PBUH ). Through Surah Kausar, ALLAH replied to his enemies by saying that these are the people who are depraved and destitute. Not a Prophet. In fact, through the revelation of this Surah, ALLAH supported HIS Prophet and granted him great prosperity. Through this great abundance, the Prophet Muhammad’s lineage continues.
ALLAH gives the good news of Hazrat Fatima R.A, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), whose lineage will come from her.
Hence this Surah was revealed, comforting the Prophet PBUH and assuring him of the eternal and abundant good that Allah had chosen for him and of the deprivation and loss that awaited his persecutors.
